Australian Cars

Australian cars can be a lot different than cars throughout the rest of the world. This goes for the layout of the car, the makes and models and even some of the options within them. When you plan on renting a car for your holiday, it’s important to take these into consideration. More importantly, it’s necessary to familiarize yourself with the vehicle before you start heading out onto the main roads.

One of the biggest things to note about cars in the country is the steering wheel is on the right hand side of the car. While this is standard for the Aussies and the British, it can take Americans and some of the others in the world by surprise. This shock alone can be cause for wanting to do a few test laps in the parking lot.

Most rental companies simply require a driver’s license to rent one of the Australian cars. This means if you’re an American and you can show a driver’s license from whatever state you come from, you’ll be able to rent a car in Australia. Whether or not you have ever driven on the other side of the road is of no consequence.

The makes and models of the cars can also be quite different. There are Toyotas and Hondas, which everyone is familiar with. However there are also Holdens, which are manufactured in Australia. A lot of the rest of the world is unfamiliar with this brand, which may cause you some hesitation when you see one of them.

Some of the models can cause you to stop and think about it, too. It may look like a vehicle you’ve seen from where you come from, but the name on the back bumper doesn’t match. There’s also the Ford Futura, the Nissan Pulsar and many others that have been made primarily for the Australian market.

Driving the Australian cars can be a lot of fun, but before you go off joy riding up and down the coast or across the outback, it’s best to spend a few minutes in the driver’s seat. What you see is not always what you get. The moment you drive it off the rental company’s lot, you’re responsible. If you don’t want an accident, you need to get the feel of what you’re driving simply because the cars are a little different.
